Whether it's been years and your entire carpet is in desperate need of a cleaning, or you just spilled an entire mug of coffee right on your floor, you might consider running up the road to the nearest Rug Doctor to rent a $30 steam cleaner. However, this do-it-yourself option might not be as affordable as you think.
Is it cheaper?
While the machine itself will only cost you $30 for the day, have you considered the costs of the cleaning solution you'll need to buy with it? Or how much solution you'll have to buy in order to thoroughly clean the area? What about the pretreating solution? Things start to add up and before you know it, your quick fix has now turned into an $85+ job. At that point, you could have easily hired a company to have come and cleaned your carpets for you - freeing up your time and energy.
Well...does it work?
These machines will obviously not work as well as the equipment professionals use and won't have the same extraction power to get up all of the dirt or even the water and chemicals you put into your carpets or rugs when trying to clean them. You'll end up completely saturating the area, potentially taking days to fully dry. During this time, your carpet is more likely to attract pollen, allergens, and dirt. Similarly, the chemicals used during cleaning tend to leave a residue on the carpet fibers causing the same issue.
If your stain happens to be a particularly unpleasant one, you risk being unable to get to the source of the issue that has most likely penetrated through the backing of the carpet by the time you get around to cleaning it. Pet stains specifically need to be thoroughly cleaned in order to remove any scent that might cause the animal to remark the area in the future.
What are my other options?
Our company approaches carpet cleaning a bit differently and uses a dry-fluid cleaning process that doesn't rely on soap, chemicals, or steam to get your carpets clean. We use a natural cleaning solution that is derived from citrus that helps to repel dirt and stains. You'd be amazed at its natural cleaning properties. Find out more about our cleaning methods here.
